Syndication
Now watchin the Addams Family and seeing how well these b&w tapes got preserved, I’m reminded on how many tv shows just got removed from existence. I know from reading both Nichelle Nicholes’ and Williams Shatner’s biographies that The Syndication was a big thing. If it weren’t for that miracle, Star Trek would’ve been long forgotten by now. Now normally ye olde tv show would be filmed, showed on tv, and be forgotten about. Syndication meant; ye olde film rolls would be preserved, copied, and sent across the globe (though ya’ll remember the Doctor Who disaster). This shit however SAVED Star Trek. The show was massively not-wanted by the big money guys, the ratings were low, no money from that anti-war political shit. And that damned producer didn’t even allow tobacco advertisements!! Cause “people in the future wouldn’t smoke blah blah ….” Yet people, and lots of them, kept writing the network, about how they wanted this silly little show to live. These writers were basically all women btw. Women are amazing. So they kept it going for three seasons, despite the bad ratings (and bad support by the network cause they were too progressive). But, somehow, they got syndicated!!! So this show got to live on! It got a BIG rerun in the 70′s and 80′s. And people, like my mum, would sit in awe on how this show could speak so many truths, and be so bold about it. It got so strong it eventually got the network’s interest again to produce more in its wake. Basically, the original idea of Star trek was so strong, it got to live on for decades, and still does. Pls let’s not let it die in bad action movies and series were people get sentenced to death and bad science prevails. thx. This post was about how difficult it was in the 60′s to keep a tv show, but it’s also about the difficulties nowadays to keep a tv show active. I know they’ve got to be dark and all serious now, but srsly, in the case of Star Trek, you’ve already got our attention. We’re in the mood for some silly and heartwarming stuff. The biggest thing about Star Trek has ALWAYS been about Hope. That’s our Thing!! The hope that humanity can overcome war and poverty and racism. That this talent of empathy is what we excel at in the universe. That hunger, disease, homelessness, prejudices, .. are things that are eradicated on planet earth. That IS Star Trek. Always has been. This equality and acceptance of ALL kinds of people, genders, abilities, love, EVERYTHING, … has always been the CORE of Star Trek . pls Trek yourself before you Wreck yourself
YES YES YES
