Just reading this post with a million comments about how awful snow is, and about 90 percent of the comments are really how awful society is. Homeless people freezing in snowdrifts? That’s not because of the snowdrifts. Shitty roads, potholes, car crashes–also not about the weather.
My favorite Star Trek head-canon about Earth is that global warming has been successfully reversed, and the methods of city transportation/building/heating developed that don’t create heat islands. So winter is what it was before global warming got going, and even urban areas in wintry climates get snow-globe-pretty winters with minimal slush. Because we’re post-scarcity, everyone can enjoy it. No one gets in car accidents on inadequately plowed roads on their way to shitty jobs that can’t spare them for a fucking day, no one’s boots leak, no one’s coat is too thin. Down and fur and leather and wool can all be replicated perfectly, and there are tons of other fabrics we haven’t even thought of yet. You can get a vitamin D hypo that takes you through the entire winter. Daylight replicating lamps are everywhere. Skiing and ice-skating and everything else is free and accessible, including modified equipment, and leisure time is plentiful so it doesn’t matter that there’s only 8 hours of daylight. Also crime is non-existent so anyone can be outside alone at any time anywhere. And no one has to live in a climate they don’t want to live in, so no one is stuck somewhere they don’t want to be.
In the Star Trek future the phrase “no bad weather, only bad clothing” will be true, and so there will be no bad weather.
