DS9 proved that you can have a Star Trek with darker themes without it being grimdark! I think the problem is that Disco is treating Section 31 like a cool edgy organization that just… exists, instead of it being insidious like it was in DS9. It’s edgy just to be edgy instead of exploring why such an organization exists. But it just goes to show what modern television values… AOS and now Disco want to make Section 31 cool and edgy instead of dealing with the nuanced moral dilemma it brought up in DS9. Maybe I’m not taking the canon time period into account as much as I should but… I think my point still stands.

In my opinion, even back on DS9, the very idea of Section 31 really went against what Star Trek was and what it was trying to establish.  Like, the whole point of Star Trek was that humanity could grow beyond that kind of subversiveness.  I mean, I recognize that the Federation is very imperialistic, but including a secret branch of Starfleet that operates without any kind of oversight and engages in genocide and God knows what just means that humanity didn’t get any better. Section 31 just means business as fucking usual and I hate that it was introduced into this universe.
