Spinning (the act of making threads) was a highly lucrative career choice; it takes lower physical movement so you’d be able to work from hom, needs no husband, creates enough money to support you, and had a very big market once there was a bigger need for clothes, which were made from fabric, which needed thread to be made. That career choice practically liberated women, and gave them the option to not be forced to marry a man for financial stability. At that time, there were very few jobs for women. Men? They’ve decided that women NEED us!! Therefore made the assumption that a spintress was a sad, lonely old woman who’s depressed and has no purpose in life but make thread because she just desperately needs men.

Slave owners and residential schools used similar arguments. It’s easier to rationalize owning and controlling someone if you can convince yourself that it’s for their own good. The poor helpless things NEED someone who knows better and can keep them safe, you see. They simply wouldn’t manage on their own….
