please… Save the Kakapo
You know about the Kakapo, right?
Even if you don’t recognize the name, you might have seen this big, chubby meme-birb on the interwebs somewhere at some point…
They are good birbs.
…But they’re also nearly extinct. Right now, there are less than 150 adults left.
They’re so few that every one of them has a name.
Some GOOD news: 2019 has been the BEST breeding season for the Kakapo in history! Lots of baby Kakapos! Bebes everywhere! Things are finally looking up for the world’s only flightless owl parrot.
The REALLY bad news: They have recently been hit with an outbreak of a disease… “Aspergillosis” has so far killed 6 adults and 4 chicks. One of them was the female Hoki. She was born in 1992 and was the sister of Sirocco, a bird that Stephen Fry got to meet in person (see the GIF above).
This is bad, because the Kakapo Recovery Project already relies HEAVILY on donations. And now they have to deal with this as well…
