Last week I heard some radio DJs mocking grown men who enjoy Disney (“It’s bad enough when it’s grown women!”).  Today, I heard radio DJs making fun of Trekkies.

Publicly mocking people for their interests and hobbies does not make you look cool or distinguished.  It makes you look like a small minded, vicious, insecure bully.

This “Oooh, yikes”/second-hand embarrassment trend has got to stop.  It’s toxic and it makes many people internalize shame over something that brings them joy.

I don’t care if you’re into Disney or Star Trek or bird-watching or sailing… I care about your character.  If someone enjoys something and is doing no harm to anyone else, why do you feel the need to comment?  Maybe you should be asking why YOU are so invested in what other people do.

Long story short, remember the Golden Rule and treat people the way you expect to be treated - and if you can’t say something nice, kindly shut the fuck up.
