I know Cardassia is generally imagined to be hot, dry, and a terrible environment for growing things. So our Garak as gardener image is a lot of him nurturing things out of the harsh environment, and that’s nice. But I like to imagine Garak doing battle with kudzu or ailanthus or the fucking forest that will reclaim your garden if you turn away for a minute and then wtf how are there 5 maple saplings here. Garak with a chainsaw, smiling at Julian and saying, “but so much of gardening is killing, my dear.”
Very thick rainforest could explain the low light that Cardassians are used to, before they built their big cities, and why they seem to wait until dusk or night time to do things (though that could also be very thick air pollution).
But yeah, Garak having to fight the rainforest at the edges of the city just to have his garden is such an image.
