Women Writing The Future…

It’s no secret that women, in front of the camera and behind, have been low in representation until very, very recently. I didn’t count all of these numbers for my own agenda but for my own curiosity. I’m a massive fan of Star Trek but sometimes you have to criticise what you love because the most aware fan is the biggest fan, not the one that covers up and ignores controversies. I’ve said for a while that Star Trek wouldn’t be what it is without women and that has some truth it but unfortunately, these numbers prove there is more progress to achieve.
Author’s Note: All this information is based on who wrote the full script (teleplay) and I only counted individual credits per episode, some people are counted multiple times across seasons. I haven’t counted if they came up with the story, just if they’ve written the script but I’ll mention story credits occasionally. If I’ve got any numbers wrong, feel free to let me know.
TOS:

Season 1: 11% written by women. (Actually, it was just D.C Fontana with 3 writing credits)
Season 2: 16.6% written by women.
Season 3: 29.6% written by women.

Season 1: 23.5% written by women.
Season 2: 0% (there’s more of these to come…)

Season 6: 11.9% written by women with 3 credits for story
Season 7: 0%…….only 1 credit for story
ENT:

Season 1: 10.2% written by women
Season 2: 0%…oh brother, no women at all.
Season 3: 0%…really? again?
Season 4: 16.1% written by women (actually, just one - Judith Reeves-Stevens)
…The Future?

Oh, brother! With 6 writing credits out of a total of 23 writing credits…..that gives season 1 of Discovery a 26%…..eh. Seems there has been no improvement behind the scenes. The Orville is similar and has a 15% (2/13) but that’s not “officially” Star Trek.
I got very annoyed angry with the DS9 doc guys, sitting around and patting themselves on the back for their diversity/pushing the envelope, etc. The entire writer/producer staff when it was on? White men. The production team for the new doc? White men.
