r/startrek is debating whether Terry announcing that Jadzia was pansexual is “pandering” and after the fact LGBT rep like Rowling announcing Dumbledore was gay…
Uh. There was an entire episode about her being in love with a woman. And kissing that woman passionately. And wanting to be with her so badly she was willing to become a pariah to her own people.
That was just right there in the text.
Seriously sometimes I want to make a will smith pose meme with a screenshot of “Rejoined” because so many fans entirely ‘forget’ it’s a thing.
Like that’s not pandering. The episode is there on Netflix for everyone to see, and even if Terry hadn’t said anything (and she has been saying that Jadzia is pansexual for a long while!) Jadzia would still be a queer character. Star Trek fans at large need to make their peace with that being canon.
I remember someone mentioning to me, that during a Q&A with Terry at Destination Star Trek a few year back some asshole asked the same thing. Even worse, from what I can tell that particular person was also trying to argue (I can certify that 100% as I haven’t been there - maybe someone who was at DST back then and remembers this moment can come forward with some more details) and being really obnoxcious about it… Terry on the other hand answered somewhat calmly and, from what I’ve been told, you could tell that she was moved talking about the scene of Jadzia and Lenara (or maybe she was distressed by some asshole trying to shove his weight around).
So yeah, people who act like that and try to claim that LGBT themes in DS9 are fake/pandering or “yaoi fangirls being delusional”, need to shut the fuck up and take their fake geek boy ass elsewhere.
And it’s not like it’s the first time she’s said it. Terry has referred to Jadzia as pan many, many times over the years.
