Denise Okuda, video coordinator for Voyager and Deep Space Nine

“We want our computer systems to be more than just pretty patterns. Even when the camera doesn’t focus on the screens, I like to think that the graphics are an important part of the environment, and that they help enhance the believably of the ship, and of the show itself.”

“I work closely with the production designers on both shows. It’s important that the video fit into the overall look that they want for each particular episode. I attend each production meeting, to get a better idea of that the producers and the directors want in each scene. With that information, I can go through the script and figure out what’s needed to give everybody what they want. Then, I come back to the art department and talk to Jim Van Over, who creates most of the animation. When Jim is finished, I send it out to the transfer house where’s it’s put on videotape. Once that’s done, I take it down to the set and give it to the videotape operator. He then puts the various images onto the different monitors.”
