People have said we should have learned the lessons from the earlier series and applied them to Voyager. I understand that thought, but I don’t know what the lesson is. We don’t go into a room and say, ‘Lets tell mediocre stories.’ We go into a room and say, 'What are the best stories we can tell?’ Part of it is that it takes time to get to know your characters, your actors. Over time, the characters begin to take a life of their own. Previous stories suggest other stories. You learn things about the characters as the world is begin created.”

I think Caretaker was a strong start for Voyager and it remains the best pilot in my eyes.
