This site is full of people who will type “cr*zy” but will fall all over endlessly self-congratulatory meta about Ari Aster’s films, which feature a cavorting line of “gruesomely” disabled and physically unattractive people acting as thematic set dressing for the emotional troubles of pretty, normal ones; like it’s all “a primer on subversive horror” / Florence Pugh in a flower crown a few weeks after her character’s life is ruined by her bipolar sister slaughtering her family in a ten-minute plot point / Milly Shapiro cast specifically because audiences are supposed to find her more unsettling to look at than most Disney channel stars / “darkness can be deep too! Don’t dismiss based on genre!”
I don’t dismiss based on genre, but I definitely dismiss based on Ari Aster! What an annoying fucking hack. It’s honestly the floor-level bar set by, like, Eli Roth that has people wanting to strew pretentious flowers at Ari Aster’s feet. “This isn’t Hostel 2; it must be intellectual”
^ THIS. Stop praising movies premised on the monstrousness of disability and ugliness.
