What do Cardassians think about love? Sex? Homosexuality?
I’m writing a fic and I don’t want to get things wrong if there’ve been things established

Thank you so much! This really helps. I’m going to do some more digging myself, and if I don’t find something on the matter (example: Cardassians on homosexuality) I’ll take some creative license.

I don’t think you’ll find anything alpha canon on Cardassian attitudes to homosexuality because the gays pretty much didn’t exist (officially) on family TV (at least not Star Trek) in the 90s/early 2000s. I remember watching the ep with Dax and Lenara Kahn when it aired and I cannot stress how groundbreaking and strange it was to see two women kissing on TV. And that was about all we got. (And I’m sure it only made it to air because it was two conventionally attractive women. Two men or a female couple who were not both conventionally hot would never have happened.)
The closest might be what Andy Robinson says about how he played Garak as pansexual and attracted to Julian from the very start, wanting to sleep with him, etc. But that isn’t really canon and even if we take it as such we don’t really get any idea about Cardassian cultural attitudes to homosexuality. Is it completely okay for them? Would Garak be so openly flirting with a man if he were on Cardassia or surrounded by other Cardassians? Is it fine for Cardassians to have same-sex relationships/sex as long as they also fulfil their familial obligation to marry someone they can have children with and then have those children? Is Garak allowed to function outside of Cardassian social norms because he’s an exile/in the Obsidian Order/an illegitimate child/the unacknowledged son of a very powerful man? We don’t know much!
