It makes perfect sense! Pandemic = more people reading fic = more site traffic = more strain on servers = money needed.

Billionaire CEOs and multinational corporations soliciting donations during a pandemic: bad because they’re the least financially affected and in some cases have seen record profits etcetera; should definitely have enough cash to pay employees without demanding the cash-strapped public pay for it
Nonprofits seeing a massive uptick in traffic soliciting donations during a pandemic: logical, coherent, acceptable because it’s their only source of income and honestly ao3 has done more for me than bezos ever will; nonprofit so UNLIKELY to have the cash to cover increased server traffic etc even with primarily volunteer staff

Not only did I donate to AO3 today, I am donating $25 in monthly installments until I have enough to get a mug, because I have relied on them extremely heavily during this whole thing.
