We talk about DS9 having a great single father with Sisko. And this is true! Everyone involved deserves a lot of credit for that, from the writers to Avery Brooks, who I understand felt very strongly about that aspect of his character.
I just think we shouldn’t forget there was another single father worth admiring: Rom.
Rom wasn’t perfect, and it’s easier to see his flaws than Sisko’s. But he supported his son 100% even when Nog wanted to go entirely against Ferengi culture. Rom stood up to Quark on Rom’s behalf even when he wouldn’t on his own. He was always so very proud of his unconventional son, and I think that’s worth celebrating when we think of the show’s legacy re: single dads.
