So what exactly is this blackout supposed to do???????
give brands and people an easy way to perform allyship without having to actually say or do anything about the current situation
This isn't true if you're doing it right. Yes, please, call out brands and other assholes for performative allyship. But that's not what the blackout is for.
Some people are saying different things, but from what I understand the overall goal is to attempt to take over the algorithm-- the blackout is asking white/nonblack artists/creators to stop boosting their stores/art/whatever and start boosting black stores, prints, art, music, clothes, foods, self-care products, etc etc and give a platform to all black-owned businesses and creators. It's also asking for ALL white/nonblack people, not just creators, to focus on boosting resources for black communities like bail funds and gofundmes who need it most right now, whenever they're not boosting black businesses.
Here's a twitter thread of black lgbt artists
Here's one for all black artists + another one here
here's a thread for black businesses, both online and lists of ones irl
Here's a short thread that links a bunch of black creatives/creators on instagram AND twitter
here's a list of black owned fashion, hair care, skincare, self care etc
Here's what TO DO and what NOT TO DO during the blackout
Here's a list of BLM carrds + donation info + resources + etc in over 15 different languages
Here's a thread of lesser known petitions that still need help reaching their goals
performative allyship is always a shitty thing, so let's use this as an opportunity to make it not performative and actually boost black voices to give them a platform through this
