The mass cultural misremembering of Captain Kirk discredits the character as portrayed in the original series and movies, and detracts from a layered, nuanced creation that does not at all reflect the pop culture stereotypes. If any future renditions of Kirk are made in film, can they please be with respect to what he is actually like in the series, and not pander to these misconceptions? It’s hard to see how it makes for a better character. Quote “watch out for Lieutenant Kirk" - not because he will chase you into bed, but because “in his class you either sink or swim” - he was a kick-ass teacher, top student , a “stack of books with legs”; on top of that, the man defies macho convention while losing none of his masculinity or appeal; he’s not excessively tall; he’s Soft™, curvy/thicc; he’s beautiful in ways women are often described as beautiful; very unperformative gender-wise and demonstrates behaviours associated across genders; wears his heart on his sleeve; is romantically bisexual or pansexual (let’s not straightwash the original series so much we ignore the entire central emotional plotline); he uses his sex appeal where it helps a mission but he also ends up in situations where he is coerced and abused (which certainly should not be celebrated as ‘conquests’); he is attracted to intelligence and a “meeting of minds” - his most long-lasting “love relationship” (words of Roddenberry) is based on a strong emotional connection - this is such a strong, interesting character that gets so poorly appropriated and skewed it’s a travesty.
