I wanted to share these up close and personal petunia pictures earlier but it took me a bit to figure out which program would convert them to a format tumblr would accept. Seeing the other cool plant pics tonight gave me the motivation to do so :)
Petunias hairs!
Properly called trichomes, these dudes help protect the leaf from creatures that would like to snack on it, as well as reducing water loss. As they are in the same family, tomatoes have similar hairs, and glands at the base of them are what give tomatoes their stickiness and tomato scent.
I am not certain whether they are trifoliate in reality or if that is an artifact of the method I used to image them.
