On his mother’s side Garak has three cousins, two aunts and an uncle who are actual tailors. ‘Garak’s Clothiers’ is a family-run chain and the one on DS9 is the first off-Cardassia branch.

He keeps trying to explain that what’s hot on Cardassia isn’t very popular on Bajor and that his location would be a lot more successful if he was allowed to display the Bajoran knits that are everywhere right now instead of ten piece Cardassian gowns. The eldest Garak tailor won’t hear of it. Bajor WILL have proper fashion one way or another.
It’s also why Garak wore the watermelon suit. He had a select number of outfits that he was approved to wear while on the job (since he was promoting their brand) and it took him two years to convince them to let him wear his normal clothes.
