I forget, being surrounded by other ag majors, how little the general populace knows and cares about like….all of the creatures that surround them.
Unfortunately, being a TA has reminded me of this fact nearly daily as answers roll in that make me die inside.
Please y’all, care about the world we live in - learn to identify some plants, some insects, a fungus or two. Without them, we can’t live, and to start to know them is to begin to have a concrete reason for caring about the environment.
And plus, it will give you endless random info…like, aphids are born pregnant, one of their major predators is a wasp that basically has the lifecycle of the chestburster from alien. In order prevent being eaten alive from the inside out by wasp larvae, the aphids waggle their butts around like their twerking. Next time you see a conglomeration of aphids, stop and look to see if they’re dancing and then you’ll know if there are wasps around!
