I haven’t done this in a while, but it’s just as enjoyable as I remember. Once upon a time I designed as much as I fabricated and I was in art school. Then I dropped out because I couldn’t handle the switch to digital. Then I had a really bad, abusive experience on one of my first professional gigs and I more or less stopped drawing/designing altogether because I thought I was a shit artist.

Quarantine and Sid City Social Club’s changed that, thanks to their series of fan-written Zoom plays performed by Sid, Andy, and whoever else can be wrangled into the mix. I decided to treat the first play series “Alone Together” like a hypothetical job and design costumes. 

For Garak and Bashir (post forthcoming) I did 6 rough pencil concepts- the writer and my critique team (LOVE YOU GUYS) picked 2 to be the finals, which I rendered in watercolor. Garak was too difficult to decide on (plus I wanted to prove that I can design something that doesn’t have cape sleeves) so I did three final renderings.

I didn’t get a ton of background info, but in the 2390s set ‘Alone Together’ Garak is Castellan of Cardassia. I kept the palette colorful, but darker (jewel tones ftw) and intentionally put his hemlines longer than what you traditionally see on Cardassian men in the show. Also I like the idea that Garak’s gone gray, but he dyes his hair into immaculate skunk stripes.
