why is it that every single time someone says “janeway is the worst captain” it’s because they’re sexist and not because… you know… it’s their genuine innocent opinion
like i’m not saying you absolutely have to like janeway because she’s a woman. you can dislike her if you want, but saying she’s the “worst” captain is a pretty bold statement: do you have any arguments?
most of the time when i ask people this, they respond with a string of sexist ideas that boil down to this: women are expected to be nurturing and gentle and unproblematic and self-effacing. they are not allowed to be flawed, and where their male counterparts are met with compassion and understanding, flawed/complex women are met with disdain.
“she makes bad decisions” “she lost her temper that one time” “she needs her crew to look out for her”
well guess what? so do kirk, and picard, and sisko. every single thing people blame janeway for is something the male captains have done/do regularly. it makes them complex, three dimensional, interesting.
with janeway, it makes her the “worst captain”
THIS is the exact reason I stand by my “Janeway best captain” stance, when people ask me Kirk or Picard, cause then it points out the sexist in them and they get all huffy puffy “I’m not sexist, Janeway just wasn’t a good captain because [sexist reason]” and it’s great.
EXACTLY. it’s so fucking funny. “I’m not sexist but”. oh, or the infamous “actually, it’s not that she was a bad captain, she was just badly written”. and then they proceed to make an absolute clown out of themselves and prove that they can’t stand a female character who isn’t someone’s love interest or sidekick.
“she badly written because [things they literally praise the other captains for]”.
i’m honestly no longer going to respond to people like that. i don’t have the time or energy to do anything but laugh at them
