“Why is your heart beating so fast?”
He doesn’t know how to answer that. There are a thousand, thousand words threatening to spill out of him, but he knows better than to let them escape. She frowns at the tricorder, checks the readings again. Her brow is creased with worry. He tries not to think about that, or about the way the back of her hand grazes the front of his uniform.
“It’s nothing,” he lies.
It’s everything. It’s the way she looks at him now, the way she tilts her head to the side. It’s the fluttering of her eyelashes as she finally understands. It’s the shuddering breath that escapes her, and the slight nod she gives when she lowers the tricorder.
“I see,” she breathes. “Report to sickbay anyway, Commander. I’m not taking any chances.”
He wants to stay, he wants to be where she is, always. But he doesn’t; she is the captain. She is his captain. As the doors to her ready room swoosh open she stops him.
“And don’t forget dinner tonight,” she smiles.
He’s convinced she can read his mind.
