This is why I’m annoyed with posts saying “Biden’s speech was just hogwash about unity with no policies in it.” Like either you are NOT paying attention at all or are purposefully spreading misinformation bc there have been tons of releases on Biden’s policies and planned actions and he has been doing this right away. Look, I’m as much a leftist as anyone and I’m no Biden fan, but you can miss me with this “both parties are equally bad” rhetoric at this point when one side is actively enabling Nazis and fascists and the other is struggling to preserve democracy. It just leads to people spreading dangerously false information.
All of this. Also, inaugural speeches are usually not policy-focused; that’s not their function. And to everyone being like “but I don’t want unity with Nazis” - me neither! And I want to point something out for those who did not read/watch Biden’s speech. Here’s a quote from it:
“A cry for racial justice some 400 years in the making moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer. A cry for survival comes from the planet itself. A cry that can’t be any more desperate or any more clear. And now, a rise in political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat. To overcome these challenges – to restore the soul and to secure the future of America – requires more than words. It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: unity.” (emphasis mine)
Biden never said he wants unity WITH the forces that have sought to destroy our democracy - he said we need unity in order to DEFEAT those forces. We should by all means hold Biden accountable for delivering on these promises. But please don’t pretend that he is calling for unity WITH the would-be Nazis.
