They can pay to bury you but not keep you alive. I hate this fucking country.
Guys I know this feels backwards but this is actually really important. There are people who cannot claim their loved ones remains because they cant afford the price of a funeral. Funerals are EXPENSIVE and for so so many families during covid it was a completely unexpected expense there was no way to prepare for. And for people who already didn't get to say goodbye to their loved ones because they weren't allowed into hospital rooms a funeral and/or memorial is an important part of the grieving process. I sincerely hope that other states follow in NY’s example.
We haven’t had my dad’s service yet because we wanted to keep everyone safe, but I had to shell out my entire savings just to cover his cremation and final expenses - and that was doing it as cheaply as possible, which doesn’t feel great for a lot of reasons.
I expect I - and a lot of other people - won’t be able to make a claim for this aid though, as I wasn’t able to afford an autopsy and gave the official cause of death recorded as Covid.
