i love star trek. so much. i can’t even properly tell you how much i fucking adore star trek. all trek. every single trek.
like, if you ever hear me say that i don’t watch/like certain star trek shows or movies, it’s not because i think they’re bad. they’re probably just not my thing or not what i’m looking for in a trek show or maybe i’m just too attached to the original canon. whatever it is, it’s never because i think they’re bad. i know that each star trek show is special to someone.
and beyond that, all trek is fundamentally good to me because of what it stands for. because behind each and every star trek show or movie, there is a dream. gene roddenberry’s vision for a future where humanity has made it to the stars.
it’s the optimism, the hope, the belief that yes, we’re going to achieve all these things! we’re going to fix all our problems on earth! and once we do, there will be so much more to explore, there will be an entire galaxy out there waiting for us, thousands of strange new worlds and even stranger new problems to solve. it’s the idea that we are capable of all this and more, that the future is bright and brilliant and the best is yet to come.
it’s also the diversity, the acceptance, the immeasurable strength of being different and yet working together. it’s the idea that love is universal, and that everyone feels it, everyone is worthy of it. star trek taught me that i belong, that there is nothing i’m not worthy of, no matter where i come from or what i look like or who i love or how i experience life.
and then there’s the idea of a universe full of life, of exploration and curiosity being encouraged, of wonders and dreams and nightmares just waiting for us out there…
star trek is a love letter to humanity. it’s hope and it’s faith and the core of it is love, so much love, for people and nature and science and art and life. what was it that captain kirk said? “a dream that became a reality and spread throughout the stars.”
i love star trek. so fucking much.
