Even though DS9 has some serious missteps, sometimes I think about how ambitious that show was and I am genuinely so impressed at how much it was able to pull off successfully. Like there's just so much going on. Every main character has their own shit and multiple relationships within relationships that for the most part are interesting and then they have literal scores of secondary characters that are interesting in of themselves. Like sure Nog's main tie starts off as Jake, Garak's is Bashir, Ziyal's is Kira but they're all such real characters that have so much depth to them despite the fact they're not mains. And that's such a few... Rom, Keiko, Dukat, Damar, Weyoun, Kasidy, Kai Winn, Martok, Leeta, Vic Fontaine, Tain... they're all so distinct and they have their own shit going on. These guys are excellent character writers. Excellent. They know how to portray complex characters in limited screentime. Plus the majority of the time the show is both able to be incredibly visceral and tackle serious shit while not becoming grim dark and still having that wild Star Trek vibe and being one of the horniest shows of a horny franchise. I feel like I can't praise the show too loud or else the writers will forget about the sexism and the killing Jadzia off Like That and the killing of Garashir and that time they thought about redeeming Dukat and pairing him off with Kira and how it Showed in the scripts of that season. But seriously. What they managed to do coherently over 176 episodes of television is... very talented.
