It annoys me how a common trope on Star Trek is ‘tee hee, I’m a workaholic, I have twenty stardates of leave saved up because I never take a break’ and that’s supposed to be something we admire. Take a holiday, idiot. Especially if you’re the boss. Set a fucking example. It’s the future now and you’re better than this toxic shit.
One of the things I like about Next Gen is the amount of time spent showing everyone having creative hobbies. They paint, they play musical instruments, they create elabourate holodeck games, they put on plays, they have poetry recitals and concerts. And this is on top of the time we see Picard reading a book, or playing detective games, or skipping out on a work function to go horse riding, and so on.
It is perfectly nomalised within TNG that everyone has enough leisure time to get really good at whatever creative thing they enjoy, while having time left over for other relaxation activities or just hanging around in ten forward with your friends having a chat.
I don’t think it’s necessarily bad to be committed to your work because of the nature of Star fleet
You can be committed to your work and still take a month or two of holidays every year, and on top of that have a good work-life balance day-to-day. Jesus Christ, Mr Burns.
