In 2020, Kenya saw an 11% increase in rhino populations. It was also the first time in 21 years that not a single rhino was lost to poaching. The fact that this was achieved during the COVID-19 pandemic–when funding from ecotourism came to a screeching halt–is all the more impressive.
Studies in 2021 show that rhino numbers in Kenya are still increasing substantially for both white and black rhino populations. This is a particularly big deal since Kenya holds around 80% of the world’s rhinos.
