It’s always amazed (and slightly alarmed) me how acutely one can feel the loss of a veritable stranger… But then, that’s the power of art - and, more importantly, kindness.
Betty White didn’t feel like a stranger though, did she? When I am lonely, watching her performances feels like having an old friend nearby. She certainly influenced my sense of humor and comedic timing, and for that I will always be grateful.
From the very inception of television, she was a pioneer in a field dominated by men. She was a champion of many social justice issues, long before it was fashionable or even socially acceptable to do so. She cherished every living creature and held all animals dear to her heart.
Even though I would have been a stranger to her, I value the lessons she taught me and the inspiration she gave to generations.
So…
Thank you for being a friend.
