Inspired by @teacuptribbles good wholesome post. Who doesn’t love a good pirate adventure?
In which Dukat’s been a bit of a shit dad, so the team™ decide to take Ziyal to the holosuite for a pirate adventure. In a twist, Kira and Garak really get into the zone for Ziyal’s sake (they are not in fact enjoying themselves), and Julian stands around complaining about the new costume that Garak has slaved over for days. No, okay. He is the supportive dork nerding out over everything happening around him, explaining every little plot detail to Ziyal, Garak and Kira until he’s blue in the face. Jadzia simplifies everything once Julian falls down one too many rabbit holes. And despite the fact that she’s nearing 20, Ziyal actually gets to be a child for once, and feel the holographic sea breeze on her face.

fuck, babe, I’m almost on the same boat, I’ve only just gotten started! I come off strong, but I only finished ds9 a little over a week ago and didn’t start reading fic until finishing A Stitch In Time (which if you haven’t I actually suggest you start there, because it essentially amounts to a 300 page love-letter from Garak to Bashir, lamenting the end of their relationship and hoping they’ll see one another again, AND it’s written by Andy Robinson so it’s just the most)
That being said @conceptadecency does some neat writing from what I’ve seen so far and @sigynpenniman knows way more than me (and may have also written fic in that direction, I haven’t actually checked yet, cos am a slowcoach) - you guys have more, please tag for us poor souls yet to fully indulge in the goodness of Julian and Garak? + anyone else feel free to plug on this post, we are yearning!
also um, this isn’t an appetizer as it is jumping directly into the main course, but I started reading “Under the Blind Moon” by @syaunei yesterday? and it is uhmazing! (I am the person under Damned_Writers who’s splurging comments on most chapters btw, when I’m not just trying to get from one to the next as quickly as possible!) It looks foreboding, but the chapters are super easy to get through, I’m already on chapter 31 and that’s without having the time to just sit and read all day (sigh, if only).
It’s set post-ASIT so again, if you haven’t read hiiiiighly recommend because it gives you such a depth of understanding of who Garak’s character is!
(also as an aside, loving the nursie icon, that takes me back)
Thanks for the shoutout! I will admit I am terrible with fic recs. @conceptadecency is fantastic. @edosianorchids901 is also one of my favorite Garashir writers and turns out some absolutely lovely stuff.
As far as my own writing, I turn out a lot of Julian-focused fluff but I have written a little garashir, mostly still in that fluffy/H/C sort of vein. My A03 handle is excessiveprepositionalphrases. My primary Garashir work is actually an AU, specifically a Victorian AU crossover with the world of HP Lovecraft. It’s probably an odd place to start being such an out of canon AU but I am quite proud of it. It is very much a WIP though!

Aw, thanks everyone for the kind words! Seconding all the recs on this post, but rather than repeat I’d like to also recommend some Garashir writers of yore who aren’t active so much anymore but are fundamental, in my opinion:
tinsnip, from whose brain sprang Speculative Cardassian Reproductive Xenobiology. Almost all Garashir smut you’ll read these days bases Cardassian sex organs on this work. But I’d really recommend all i ever wanted was just to come in from the cold, which tore me apart.
bmouse has a lot of beautiful one-offs. Another Line of Work Presents Itself is perhaps my favourite.
prairiecrow also has a lot of lovely one-offs.. Here’s a nice one to start with: The Blessing of Diversity
And if I could recommend one of my own fics that I think is fairly accessible, you could try The Swindle, a post-canon Cardassia work in which Garak tracks down a rogue greengrocer who has sold Julian some bad fruit.
I second the recommendation of @bmouse, particularly the Inconsequential Matter of the Feet.
Another favorite of mine is Inside Out by Prevailing, who is just an absolute master storyteller.

Why is mpreg among the most scorned of fan fiction tropes? It shouldn’t be. Seems kind of gynophobic and transphobic to me, and we should probably write more of it. Anyway, hope you like it.
“I don’t know why everyone thinks I’m the other father of Garak’s baby,” said Julian, frowning into his springwine.
Jadzia and Miles exchanged glances.
“You are awfully invested in his care,” Miles ventured.
“Miles, I’m his doctor. Of course I’m invested in his care. I care about all my patients.”
“We know you do, Julian.” Jadzia placed a reassuring hand on Julian’s arm. “But you don’t insist on meeting your other patients for lunch every day to make sure they’re eating properly.”
“Well, it’s a very complicated pregnancy.”
“And you didn’t sleep on our sofa three nights out of four when Keiko and Kira were pregnant with Yoshi.”
“Miles, he’s all alone and he’s my friend…”
“And you’re the only one Garak will allow to touch his bump,” said Jadzia. “I asked and he said no, and Morn’s lucky he still has his hand.”
“Well, again, I’m his doctor, and Morn should know better than to touch anyone without asking first. Especially Garak.”
“Julian,” said Miles, “I saw you talking to Garak’s belly outside the shop yesterday.”
Julian blushed. “I was saying goodbye to Garak.”
Miles snorted. “You bloody were not, unless you’ve started talking to him in baby talk.”
“Well, it’s good for them to hear different voices. It develops their brains.”
“Okay. You’re the doctor.” Miles popped a sand pea into his mouth. “I’m just saying that you seem more excited about this pregnancy than Garak is.”
“No, he’s excited too! And he’s my friend, of course I’m excited.”
Miles frowned. “Julian, don’t take this the wrong way, but you weren’t nearly this excited about Yoshi.” Miles held up a hand. “And that’s fine! You were a good friend and doctor and we didn’t expect you to be!”
“It’s just,” Jadzia paused, “Julian, I don’t know what Garak said to you, but are you hoping…is there any chance at all this could be your baby?”
Julian gaped.
“I just mean, you and Garak had a thing for a while. We wondered if you’d rekindled it recently, and that maybe there was a small possibility…or that you were holding out hope…maybe subconsciously?” Jadzia, uncharacteristically, was at a loss for words.
“Julian, the reason everyone thinks you’re the other father is because you’re acting like you’re the other father,” Miles interjected.
“Yes,” said Jadzia, throwing a grateful look at Miles. “we were just concerned.”
Julian stood up, shocked. “Thank you, Jadzia, Miles. You’ve…given me something to think about. I’ve got to go meet Garak now.” He turned to go, then turned back. “But it’s definitely not my baby. I can tell you that for certain.”
“Masya’s other father,” Julian began between bites of his scone.
“Is that what we’re calling him?”
“We can call him whatever you like.”
In literally the second episode we ever see him, Garak breaks into Julian’s bedroom in the middle of the night to take him on holiday and then later gets to live out an elaborate power fantasy where his hot new twink boyfriend absolutely fucking OWNS his asshole previous boss, I am not exaggerating in any way
I call this gifset ‘plain simple Garak getting hard at the sight of his genius twink boyfriend legitimately eviscerating a guy he hates.’
