I confess, I absolutely love Seska. She’s clever, cunning, ruthless but not without her own sense of morality. She has everything I want in a good villain. And then the producers went ahead and completely wasted her potential by throwing her in with the Kazon. The Kazon! The guys who are barely competent enough to not blow up their own ship. Ugh :(

I’ve just watched ‘Basics, Part I’ and it is a completely different episode in the Kelvin Timeline. I’m still going to watch Part II tomorrow buuut it is not the same episode at all.

To recap, a few crucial points:

  1. Seska’s actual family name is Madra; Seska was the name of some especially unfortunate Bajoran woman from a labour camp.
  2. Her true identity is only known to a few members of the senior staff (Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok and the Doctor) in order to keep the crew from panicking and the Maquis from possibly spacing another crew member. Since Voyager is her only way back to Cardassia, Tuvok believes she won’t do anything too heinous since it is in her best interests to assist the rest of the crew. He did not account for the fact that Obsidian Order operatives are not exactly loyal allies and that Cardassians in general will cheerfully double-cross you and possibly kill you once they feel you’ve outlived your usefulness to them.
  3. She’s collecting up crew for a mutiny and has been using some of her people to communicate with the Kazon-Nistrim, seeking their assistance in taking over Voyager. (Her crew, whilst containing the odd human, is actually mostly Vulcan who see the logic in more aggressive tactics and looser interpretation or outright abandonment of 'Fleet regs, likely won’t allow her true species to change their decisions, and are comfortable at temperatures closer to her preferred range.)

The crew of Voyager intercepts what they think is a Talaxian distress call and goes to assist them. Unfortunately the Talaxian ship has been commandeered by a Kazon boarding party. Said Kazon proceed to board Voyager and assist Madra and her mutineers in taking over the bridge. Janeway and the regular bridge crew are taken to the brig. Under Madra’s command, Voyager rendezvous with Maje Culluh’s ship, and trades technology (which she has no intention of actually teaching them to install or use) for permission to keep a few Kazon from the boarding party as enforcers.

That done, she announced to the entire ship that the ship (renamed to CUV Cova*) is now under the command of Jiana Madra of the Obsidian Order. (Cue mass 'oh crap’ from the Starfleet crew and disgusted looks from her fellow Maquis.)

*the cova (pronounced sho-vah), according to an excellent worldbuilding post from @ladyvean that I will be providing a link to, is a highly venomous Cardassian snake, the venom of which is sometimes employed by the Order. Somehow I doubt a Cardassian operative would enjoy having a ship with a Federation name and prefix so of course she’d rename it.)

Part II coming tomorrow!
