Cardassian Animals

ladyvean

I was just playing around with what one might see at a Cardassian zoo, and thought you guys might get some enjoyment out of it.  Some of these animals are mentioned in canon, but I mostly came up with the descriptions.  I also came up with a term for an animal that is somewhere between mammal and reptile - tUrn’hU (warm scale), inspired by @feltelures and @tinsnip Kardasi, thought the concept itself is mine.

Vole (tUrn’hU) – small, six-legged creature with a scattering of hair and sharp teeth, poor eyesight, minor “spoon” on the head, spends most time underground or in other dark places, often considered a “pest,” common across most of Prime·

Regnar (reptile) – small reptile, usually found in the desert and surrounding areas, blind, capable of blending into the environment, very fast, population unknown due to speed and “cloaking” ability·

Zabu (mammal) – large domesticated mammal, similar to a cow, used in agriculture for both its meat and its milk, which is especially prized for the thick, sweet cream that can be made from it, large hump around shoulders which stores reserves during times of draught and food scarcity, very sturdy animal, able to survive in most environments, variations found across Prime·

Măgath (reptile) – snakes, ranges in size, coloration, temperament, can be either venomous or non-venomous, various subspecies found in all regions of Prime.

Common Garden Kut Măgath – medium sized black snake often found in gardens, eats small rodents, lizards, and insects, non-venomous, fairly non-aggressive unless directly threatened.

Roklan – the largest species of snake native to Cardassia Prime, found only in the jungles of the Southern continent, non-venomous, but extremely rare due to habitat loss.

Cova - medium to large snake found in the lower mountainous regions and rocky outcroppings, coloration ranges from sandy to red to brown, often has bands or speckles to help it camouflage, very thick body, highly venomous, venom causes seizures and distress on the pulmonary system, a single bite can kill an adult Cardassian, the venom has been known to have been harvested by the Obsidian Order for use in toxic agents, vulnerable (pronounced sho-vah)   ·

Taspar (bird) – small avian species found in less arid regions of Prime, colorful, known for its beautiful song, most common along the coastal regions, but has been known to colonize cities where water is plentiful·

Regova (bird) – avian species found primarily in the desert and surrounding areas, four legs and two large wings, powerful jaws and talons for attacking prey and defending their nests, females are particularly aggressive, especially when nesting or guarding recently hatched young, feathers are generally rust colored with a shiny black beak and large black eyes, vulnerable due to eggs being harvested for food·

Riding Hound (mammal) – canine like animal, approximately the size of a horse with a long snout and a tufted tail, large, tufted paws good for moving on desert sands and rocky areas, colors range from light gray to black, mostly domesticated, though can be willful, originally used for transportation, but now mostly kept for sport and enjoyment, common·

Dwarf Riding Hound (mammal) – a miniature version of a Riding Hound, approximately the size of a goat, domesticated and very docile, originally breed to pull carts and plows, now used for children’s riding and enjoyment, greater range of color and coat patterns than full size Riding Hounds, common·

Kovabug (insect) – a small, hard-shelled insect known for its beautiful coloration, the outer shell is a deep blue with hints of green in the sunlight, the shell splits to deploy the wings underneath, which make a pleasant humming sound as the insect flies, highly prized by Cardassian children, who often collect the colorful discarded shells when the insect molts, common in most regions with decent vegetation·

Urall (mammal) – a largish herbivore, prized for its hide, which is used to make high-end leather, extinct in the wild, but kept by a small handful of artisans who produce the leather for the Cardassian elite ·

Flayers (tUrn’hU) – extremely dangerous predatory animal, found in the desert, sand colored fur and scales with deep gray forehead “spoon,” large, piercing fangs, excellent eyesight and hearing, armored back and ridges along spine and around eyes, six legs, prey on everything from gettle to zabu, have been known to even attack and kill adult Cardassians, hunt in small packs of 5-10 members, but can be cannibalistic, vulnerable·

Gettle (mammal) – smaller pack animal, grazers that live off of the sturdy grasses that grow on the outskirts of Prime’s many deserts, reddish-brown colored fur with a white underbelly, all have spiraling black horns, though the males are larger than the females, have become extremely rare due to poaching·

Onyx Beetles (insect) – named for their color, commonly found in gardens, will often burrow underground and eat the roots of plants, common·

Sleg Corgan (reptile) – large reptile native to the lower regions of the Northern continent, carnivorous, but has also been known to scavenge on deceased prey, incredibly well adapted to food scarcity, it eats only twice a year, known for slow movement, except when hunting, and spends most of its time completely motionless, rare·

Utoxa (bird) – water fowl, found primarily along the coast near Lakarian City and Culat during the warm winters in that area, will migrate to the equatorial region during the cooler months, long turquoise feathers with dark blue underbellies and webbed feet, fish eaters, vulnerable·

Scottril (tUrn’hU) – related to the vole, six legs and a small forehead “spoon,” lives primarily in city sewers and other dark, damp areas, colors range from dark brown to black, limited eyesight, but extremely keen sense of smell, common ·

Toj’Lath (tUrn’hU) – ancient ancestor of the modern Cardassian, about half the height of an adult Cardassian, but very broad, similar ridge structure and coloration, though it has more blue highlights and scaling, highly intelligent, has a series of horns that start on the bridge of the nose, which increase in size as they run up to the hairline, strong prehensile tail, unlike most tUrn’hU, the “egg horn” never drops off, but stays in the place of the forehead “spoon,” revered by the Hebitians and often depicted on ancient tombs and religious artifacts, rare·

Hekant (mammal) – a small, herbivorous mammal with long ears, known for its downy coat, mostly domesticated and used for meat and fur, though there are still some wild varieties found in various regions of Prime, selectively bred for a variety of colors and coat patterns, sometimes kept as pets, common  ·

Rhirzum (mammal) – a large feline with elongated fangs, also found only in the jungles of the Southern continent, however, fossil evidence suggests that this species used to be found across Prime, only known mammalian species on Prime to have developed venom, which can be sprayed and is akin to acid, causing severe pain, scarring, and blindness, it is believed that their venom was diluted with other compounds by the Hebitian clergy and when ingested produced trance-like states, rare due to habitat loss·

Thăv’os (tUrn’hU) – a medium sized, horned animal with six legs and a very faint forehead “spoon,” found in the upper regions of the mountains, remarkable at climbing the steep cliffs, the bones of its legs were extremely thin, but very solid and were often harvested to be used as writing implements, primarily covered in light gray scales, but has a mane of white, feathery hair on its head, chest, and shoulders, vulnerable ·

Vompăt (mammal) – a small, domesticated animals with a long, furry body and four short legs, extremely friendly and curious, make excellent pets, common·

Zeryd (bird) – a large avian animal, two pairs of small, non-functional wings, but has two long, extremely powerful legs ending in two clawed toes, a kick can disembowel most prey and they will eat almost anything, including carrion, tearing off chunks of flesh with their razor sharp beaks, both males and females are covered in shiny, black feathers, despite being found in more arid regions of Prime, rare·

Arafta (tUrn’hU) a moderately sized animal found only on a small island off the Southern continent peninsula, it is covered in beige armored scales, though it also has a smattering of fur, it spends most of its life in the trees, where it uses its claws to dig into the bark for insects, though it will also eat fruit, lives in small family groups, intelligent and curious, but extremely rare due to limited habitat

Calling all cosplayers!  Calling all cosplayers!

Hello, my Star Trek friends and family.  As I’m sure you’re all aware, many hospital and medical facilities in the United States are currently facing protective mask shortages due to the corona virus/covid-19 pandemic.

In an effort to protect our medical workers on the front-lines of this pandemic, I am coordinating with the 501c3 non-profit organization, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition – founded and run by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actress, Chase Masterson – the construction and delivery of hand sewn fabric masks by you, our cosplay community.

Specifications for the masks and face shields have been provided to us by medical community professionals.

When discussing the importance of Star Trek on our culture, one of the resounding statements always heard is that Star Trek is about hope for the future, about humanity coming together to help one another so that no one lives in need. Now is our opportunity to put those words into action.

As always, non-Trekkies are not only welcome, but encouraged to participate as well! One need not be a fan to live the ideology of Star Trek.  Anyone interesting in participating in this relief effort, please contact me directly for further instructions.

Thank you all!  Stay safe, stay clean, and LLAP!

The face mask initiative is now officially called Shields for Healthcare Heroes.

In addition to masks, many hospitals are in desperate need of face shields.  For you crafty types, these are relatively straightforward to make and I’m more than happy to provide you with the instructions - which we received directly from medical professionals.

Please message me if you’re interested!

Okay I have too many intense feelings today about Star Trek and why I love it, so instead I’ll make a post about the fandom.

The Star Trek fandom is the most positive fandom I’ve ever been part of. I don’t know if it’s because all the discoursetm and dramatm was settled 50 years ago, or if it’s because of the peaceful nature at the heart of the franchise, or because all of us who enjoy it are full of love and wonder and curiosity, I don’t know.

When I look at this fandom, I believe in Gene Roddenberry’s future. A future of love and peace and acceptance, where we seek to learn and explore rather than to exploit and oppress. We have the power to bring about that future. The UFP might be science fiction, but kindness and equality for all of us on planet Earth- that doesn’t have to be. I hope we keep this dream for 50 more years, and another 50 years after that, for as long as we can, whether or not it comes true.

I don’t care if you’ve only seen the reboot movies, or only one series, or only a few episodes. If you like Star Trek, you’re one of us. I love you. All of you. Thank you so, so much.

what is a Star Trek?

Star Trek is about people being sexy and overly dramatic in space. After solving all their problems, humans of the future flew out into the stars to find more problems and have ethical conundrums about them while tricking the audience into thinking about real-world issues.

Earth doesn’t have war, famine or Jeff Bezos anymore so humans formed a club with their alien friends where everybody can just chill and be cool (humans are best friends with a bunch of space elves who have bowl cuts and pretend they don’t feel emotions). Sometimes the club gets into fights with space orcs or cyborg zombies trying to strip everyone of their individuality but it’s usually resolved pretty quickly so they can go back to chilling and exploring space.

Every time they Boldly Go into space they find Weird Shit™ and People Who Are Very Different but this is resolved by doing technology stuff or making dramatic speeches. The elves also have imperialist cousins (dark elves) who sneak around in invisible ships and pop up every once in awhile to try and trick us into getting in a fight with them, but this never works and they end up taking their football and going home.

Star Trek comes in six flavours:

Star Trek TOS (Original Flavour): made in the Sixties. A feminist captain with a weird speech pattern, a charming redneck doctor and a space elf go to space and run into all sorts of crazy things like sentient rocks, Cold War allegories, pouty gods and evil doppelgangers. The captain is gay for the elf, who is half human but very much in denial about it. A Scottish guy fixes the ship. There are lots of fistfights and miniskirts. It also got adapted into a very trippy cartoon in the Seventies! And six movies.

The Next Generation (Sequel Flavour): made in the Eighties/Nineties. Same concept as TOS but there’s more of it. The captain is a bald guy who talks like he’s in a Shakespeare play all the time. There’s also a bearded guy who’s always DTF, a robot who loves to cosplay Sherlock Holmes, and a psychologist (but they mostly just use her as a lie detector). The orcs are our friends now and one of them works on the ship. They spend a lot of time getting stuck in their cosplay machine, dealing with Time Fuckery and the dark elves being sneaky again, and getting kidnapped by a trickster god who has a crush on the captain. Also has four movies that are mostly about the captain and the robot.

(Bald captain has his own show now where he is friends with Space Legolas and they try to figure out if robots are evil. It is a very Different Flavour.)

Deep Space Nine (Story Arc Flavour): made in the Nineties. Instead of flying a ship around they’re on a space station guarding a wormhole to the other end of space (but sometimes they still fly around). This one has plotlines! The captain is a single dad who meets gods in the wormhole and accidentally becomes Jesus to a race of aliens that survived space lizard fascism. His 2nd in command is a terrorist who fought the lizards, his best friend is a trans lady with an immortal worm in her stomach that carries memories of her past lives, and their mechanic is a grumpy Irishman who accidentally becomes best friends with a very annoying doctor. Head of security is a grumpy blob of Jello who can turn into anything he wants. He’s always trying to arrest the bartender, a space goblin who worships capitalism. They end up in a big fight with Nazis from the wormhole. One of the lizards who thinks he is Very Handsome won’t leave them alone. There is also a bi lizard assassin who is so gay for the doctor he turns into a good guy, plus a mean lady Pope and literal demons.

Voyager (Action Adventure Flavour): also Nineties. A lady captain is chasing some dissidents and her whole ship gets thrown to the opposite end of space (not the one with the wormhole). She tries to get them home while dealing with cabin fever, the time police, aliens who try to kill them for trespassing, and a tragic lack of coffee. Her best friend is an elf but is not so Dramatic about it. Later she adopts one of the cyberzombies, and they spend a lot of time flipping the double bird at the cyborg zombie queen. Their Doctor is a hologram who wants to be an opera singer.

Enterprise (Prequel Flavour): early 2000s. Humans are flying around in space for the first time, trying to make new friends (like the blue antenna people) so they can form their club, which doesn’t exist yet. The elves are kind of dicks about it, but they start to come around. The captain is a big lovable dork who gets beat up a lot. His best friend is a redneck and their doctor is a polyamorous puffer fish with a zillion weird pets. After being constantly pestered by the time police for awhile, they then have to stop some zoo people who want to make Earth kasplode. Sadly gets cancelled just as they get down to business.

Kelvin Timeline (Reboot Flavour): there are also three movies with new actors playing younger versions of the TOS characters. An angry miner kills the space elf planet and makes a new timeline where the feminist captain is a horny frat boy and his elf boyfriend is Straight™ and has temper tantrums all the time. Everyone is Cool and there are lots of big spaceships and explosions. Also Benedict Cumberbatch.

Discovery (Modern Flavour): now with Canon Gays™! A grumpy fungus expert figures out how to make the ship fly around the universe with mushrooms. The main character was adopted by elves (the elf guy from TOS is her brother). She’s friends with an adorable girl who never shuts up and a space gazelle man with Anxiety. She gets arrested for awhile but then falls in love with a walking spoiler and they try to stop the space orcs from being such huge assholes. Later they chase an angel around the galaxy and get a new captain whose cheekbones are so sexy they have to save themselves with time travel. This one is still going!

There are lots of people on the internet who will try to tell you which of these flavours is the Good Star Trek and which ones are Bad. Some of them will even say this or that flavour is Not Star Trek. Those people are wrong and you should enjoy whatever flavour you think is the most fun! Some of the flavours start out kind of bland at first but they grow on you, others are too spicy for some people and that’s ok. You might enjoy all the flavours or just one (or even none at all) but the important thing is you get to decide! There are even flavours that don’t exist in the shows or movies! Because the best thing about Star Trek is there’s a lot of it.
